On Monday (March 17), Universal Music Group filed a motion to dismiss Drake‘s lawsuit against them. Drake’s label is accusing the Canadian rap star of suing over Kendrick Lamar‘s “Not Like Us” because he ultimately came out on the losing end after trading a series of diss tracks with the Compton rapper, and is attempting to save face by taking legal action. The motion argues that Drake “lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated. Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds. Plaintiff’s Complaint is utterly without merit and should be dismissed with prejudice.” Drake’s attorney maintains that the lawsuit holds UMG accountable for profiting from “dangerous misinformation” conveyed by Lamar’s chart-topping hit, while Drake claims that Universal launched a promotional campaign behind a song portraying him as a criminal pedophile.
