Get to know THE LEGEND, Joe “Broadway Joe” Booker

Joe Booker, known as “Broadway Joe,” has had a distinguished career in broadcasting, community service, and youth mentorship. A native of Kingstree South Carolina, Joe began his broadcast career in the military at Osan Air Force Base, Korea, in 1976, serving as an announcer in the Armed Forces Korean Network. Upon relocating to Arkansas, Joe attended Arkansas State University, earning his associate degrees in 1980. He later completed a Bachelor of Arts in African-American Community Leadership from Arkansas Baptist College in 2013

In 1981, Joe became the morning show host and music director at KWTD 106.3 FM in Lonoke. By 1985, he had joined KOKY 1250 AM as the music director and midday host. His career advanced further in 1988 when he joined Power 92 as an evening announcer, eventually moving to the morning show in 1990. In 1996, Joe launched his own video show, which has since become the longest-running local urban TV show in Arkansas.

In 1997, Joe revitalized KOKY by reestablishing the station at 102.1 and became the program director for both KOKY and Power 92. He created the “Blues on the River” event in 1999 and the Juneteenth celebration for Power 92 in 2000, raising over $140,000 for The Watershed, Inc.

After Citadel Communications took over the Little Rock group of stations, they had the 1250 AM frequency open. Joe was allowed to put on a gospel AM station, which he named K Light Gospel, launching in January 1998 with the call letters KLIH. The station is now on FM and known as KPZK 102.5 Praise FM, one of the stations he now oversees.

Joe’s dedication to community service is evident through his leadership of the Power 92 Jammers basketball team, which started in 1990. The team, composed of radio personalities and community hoopers, has raised over $2 million for charitable organizations across Arkansas and Memphis. He also started coaching youth football in 1980 and remains the President and AD of the Jacksonville Mighty Vikings.

In 2002, Joe addressed the need for community service and PSAs by forming the Broadway Joe Talk Show, providing a platform for community and nonprofit organizations to discuss their events. In 2005, he was promoted to Director of Programming for Cumulus Media in Little Rock, overseeing programming for multiple stations, including Power 92.3 FM, KOKY, and Praise. Joe has received numerous awards for his community service and humanitarian efforts, including recognition from Billboard and Radio Records Station of the Year, the National Black Programmers Coalition, and the NAB Marconi Radio Award.

Joe continues to contribute to his community through various services, including the Watershed, Inc. annual Christmas Food Drive, Little Rock’s Crisis Team and Gang Task Force, serving as an alumni board member for Arkansas Baptist College, and the O.K. Program, a national mentoring model for African-American men and boys. He is currently the Director of Programming at Cumulus Media-Little Rock, Program Director for KIPR Power 92.3 FM, KOKY, and Praise, and host of the Broadway Joe Morning Show, the Broadway Joe Talk Show, and the Broadway Joe Video Show.

Joe attributes his success to his family, especially his wife Freddie, with whom he has been married for over 35 years, their children, and grandchildren. He believes that “Family is the key to all of his success.” His number one phrase is, “Family, we all we got.” God is first in his life.
